I bought this book to study for my (Oracle Certified Associate - PL/SQL Developer) exam number 1Z0-144 [Oracle 11g: Program with PL/SQL].Now this book was written way back in 2002 so the actual exam this is meant for is 1Z0-147 "Oracle 9i: Program with PL/SQL" which still exists but just labelled (Program with PL/SQL).For the most part it touches on the things I needed and it would serve you well if you're taking Exam 1Z0-147 - Program with PL/SQL, but if you're taking the 11g version which I did, I would still get this book but get others as well. Overall Steve's books are good (I bought his OCE - Database SQL Expert one) and the style is the same.A bit dated but still worth it.Edit: 0n 08/24/2015 I passed the exam (1Z0-144) with a percentage of 73%. Minimum passing is 65%. Not as much of a gap as I'd hoped for but still passed it in the end.
I have not real gripes with book. It is not great; it is not bad. There are not a lot of resources out there to use to study for the OCP Developer exam. This seems to be one of the few resources out there outside of one of the exam prep companies.I've been in this business more than a few years, and I am used to reading technical manuals and books. This one is especially dry. I really had to crack my internal whip to get after it.My real gripe is the CD packaged with it. I'm not even all the thru the practice tests and modules and I ready to take it to the skeet range. It is a piece of junk.Let's start off with the interface. It looks like something coming out of a high school computer class 10 years ago. And the button that says "Guess again" after an incorrect answer is so juvenile.Then add in the errors, bugs and poor design. My favorite design flaw is where they state after a question "Choose all that apply" then give you radio buttons. Well guess how many can apply! If there is more than one answer they give you check boxes.More than once I have a question come back as incorrect, look at their explanation text only to have it tell me the one I selected was the correct answer, arrggghhh.On a few questions the chosen answer was just flat out wrong. I have spent time researching these which is I suppose a good learning exercise, but hopefully that is not what they intended.Use the book; chunk the CD in the trash.
I used this book to prepare for pl/sql exam and scored 49/57. It is a good study guide. I have not had difficulty going through the book since I was exposed to the pl/sql language when I was studying for the exam (1z0-001, Introduction to oracle 8i sql and pl/sql). This was a huge benefit for me and I only spent about three weeks reading the book. I will say that this exam (1z0-101) is built on the first one (1z0-001). I am not sure if it is also built on the exam (1z0-007). You will need to know the basics of pl/sql to fully understand this book.The author did a pretty job breaking down all the information you need for the exam. There was no questions on Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 was barely touched with one question on debugging.I will advice you to read carefully the book and make sure you master the concept before you go take the exam. If you do it the exam comes easy for you. You will be shown a lot of codes during the exam. My strategy was this: in order to avoid wasting time reading the entire code, I read the question first. That allows to me spot quickly the objective and see quickly what is being asked without reading the long code. Stuff you need to be carefull of:-Parameter declaration in Function and Procedure header-Function without a Return-Public and Private Constructs behavior-Triggers behavior-Function and Procedure callThis strategy allowed to complete my exam in less than one hour. I took the test last week but failed with a score of 26.Looks like you need to prepare thoroughly and in depth to clear this test. I took by word the other reviews which claimed after studying this book,the test would a cakewalk. It doest seem so and the questions were more tricky and difficult. If you are planning to take ,prepare in depth and be prepared to expect tougher questions than in this book.
It is good for exam only . Don't get it if you plan to learn the subjects there are many sources online

A great book by a great author (Oracle SQL Certified Expert) and although this test (1Z0-101) is no longer available, many concepts in this book are still valid for 10g/11g
